Review: The Verdant Cage by Jess Lourey

I am so back in my dystopian era! The Verdant Cage is an action packed twisty book that had me gasping! I finished this one on vacation as well because I needed to know. Keep reading this book review of The Verdant Cage for my full thoughts.

Summary

For as long as seventeen-year-old apothecary Rose Allgood can remember, the towering stone Wall surrounding Noah’s Valley has protected her people. No one leaves. No one fights. And no one questions why.

But their paradise has been hiding its thorns. When Rose’s mother becomes the Valley’s first murder victim and her twin brother is swiftly condemned, she alone is searching for the real killer. Determined to find the truth, she follows a trail of hidden messages, forbidden knowledge, and whispers of a past no one dares to remember.

The deeper she digs, the more certain Rose becomes that her mother’s death was no accident. That the Wall isn’t just keeping something out.

It’s keeping something in.

Review

(Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher. This has not impacted my review which is unbiased and honest.)

The Verdant Cage is a dystopia fantasy which will keep you guessing. It’s very much about the walls we surround ourselves with. But are the walls there to protect us from the Outside or to protect the Outside from us? It’s about a society that demands obedience, but what happens when the cracks start showing? When we begin to question? For Rose, she’s been the most obedient, but as the signs keep piling up, she realizes she’s been living a life where she’s been making herself smaller to fit into a box. And as soon as we begin to open our eyes, we see things we can’t ignore anymore. There’s power struggles, mysterious fantastical twists, and illusions.

I got wrapped up in The Verdant Cage and the ending had be shocked! It’s about secrecy and power, the corruption and consolidation of absolutes and trust. After the ending I immediately wanted to re-read it and see if I could predict some of the twists if I knew they were coming and in this day and age where my TBR is off the charts, I don’t know a better compliment. This brought the nostalgia of dystopias back and I am so here for it. Find The Verdant Cage on Goodreads, Storygraph, Bookshop. org, Blackwells, & Libro. fm.
