Review: And They Were Roommates by Page Powars

With a title like this, how could I not adore And They Were Roommates. I’ve enjoyed Powars book in the past, so I knew I had to read this sophomore book! And it was so delightful! Keep reading this book review of And They Were Roommates for my full thoughts.

Summary

Romance is the last thing on Charlie’s mind.

On his first day at Valentine Academy for Boys, Charlie’s carefully crafted plan to hide his identity as the school’s only trans student is set in motion. Only to be immediately destroyed. Charlie has been assigned the worst roommate in the world (possibly the universe): Jasper Grimes, the boy who broke Charlie’s heart the year before he transitioned.

Except, Jasper doesn’t recognize Charlie.

Who knows how long until Jasper realizes the truth? Charlie has one shot at freedom and a dorm room all to himself, but only if he helps Jasper write love letters on behalf of their fellow students first. No problem. Charlie can help Jasper with some silly letters.

Long nights spent discussing deep romantic feelings with Jasper? Surely, no unintended consequences will arise…

Review

(Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher. This has not impacted my review which is unbiased and honest.)

With almost a Cicero vibe to this, And They Were Roommates is a delightful story about second chances and being vulnerable. It’s a testament to realizing that things are scary, that love is a risk, but to keep going. To realize it’s not about being fearless, about safe loves, it’s about realizing that and that it’s worth it. And They Were Roommates is charming, chaotic, and swoony. It’s a testament to finding our people and sticking by them. Sometimes we’re so focused, still reeling from the hurt, that we don’t see the people around us. The ones who can be our support and safe space to be. I adored every side character to pieces and want to read so much more about them!

I love me a second chance romance, but even more so when we have to figure out if we can forgive someone. So much time has elapsed and we’ve both changed as people, but can there be a second chance? Who are we now and who do we want to be? If you want a heartfelt contemporary, And They Were Roommates has to be on the list.
