Review: You Did Nothing Wrong by C.G. Drews

This horror book transported me. I am not normally a horror reader, but there’s something in the air in 2026. You Did Nothing Wrong is an epic and disconcerting book – in the best way! Keep reading this book review of You Did Nothing Wrong for my full thoughts.

Summary

Single mother Elodie’s life has become a fairy tale. She’s met Bren, equal parts Golden-retriever-devoted and sinfully handsome. He’s whisked her and her autistic son, Jude, to the crumbling family house he’s renovating. She has a new husband, a new house, and a new baby on the way. Everything is perfect.

Until Jude claims he can hear voices in the walls. He says their renovations are “hurting” the house. Even Elodie can’t ignore it―something strange is going on.

The question is, Is it with the house, or with her son?

And what is Elodie hiding?

Review

(Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher. This has not impacted my review which is unbiased and honest.)

You Did Nothing Wrong is unsettling in the best way. It’s unsettling in the way it feels to be in your home at night alone. The ways the familiar takes on this new angle, the creaks which you dismiss become dangerous and alien. All the mundane which has shadows growing on the walls and the stories your mind spins when you can’t reel it in. All the unsettling feelings, the pit of your stomach which drops, the hair raising on your arms, and your fists clenching. You Did Nothing Wrong cracks these illusions and never allows you to let your guard down. You can never be sure if you’re seeing everything.

I listened to You Did Nothing Wrong on audiobook and Saskia Maarleveld was dynamite. There’s this creepiness which settles in immediately and only deepens. Everyone has this atmosphere about them which seems like they could switch at any moment. That a switch could flip and someone’s veneer will crack. And the house becomes something almost otherworldly. You Did Nothing Wrong explores motherhood deeply. It explores unconditional love, conditional love, and parental failures. C.G. Drews explores the illusions of perfection, of having it all together, of success. It’s full of gaslighting, unreliable narrators, and the roles we play – and cast ourselves in.

You Did Nothing Wrong is captivating. It’s intoxicating and obsessive as we delve into the ‘right and wrongs’ of parenthood, of love which fails us, and ways we make amends. Find You Did Nothing Wrong on Goodreads, Storygraph, Bookshop. org, Blackwells, & Libro. fm.
