I wanted to fall in love with Heir of Storms, but I don’t think it was for me. I love the idea of storm and elemental magic. And add to that magical trials! But the spark just didn’t catch. Keep reading this book review of Heir of Storms for my full thoughts.
Summary
The very day Blaze came into the world, she almost drowned it. A Rain Singer born into one of the most powerful fire-wielding families in the empire, Blaze’s birth summoned a devastating storm that left thousands dead. She’s been hidden away ever since with a dark secret: the same torrential power that branded her an outcast disappeared that fateful day. And she’s not sure she wants it back.
When an unexpected invitation arrives for Blaze and her twin brother, Flint, to compete as future rulers of the empire, she’s suddenly thrust into the limelight again — and into battle. Threats abound at the Golden Palace, where intrigue and romance await with not one but two handsome suitors: the enchanting Crown Prince and a dangerously alluring newcomer at court.
As Blaze explores her untapped power, she discovers the throne may be within her grasp. But in order to take it, she’ll have to leave behind the stories that others have told about her, and find the courage to write her own.
Review

(Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher. This has not impacted my review which is unbiased and honest.)
Heir of Storms has everything I should love. I love the idea of elemental magic, competitions and chaperones, and politics. But I just needed a bit more. It was like a spark that needed to be lit. It starts off with a bang and then I felt like the tension loses some steam as the competition gets started – which seems like it would ramp it into high gear? I loved the idea of the courts, magic, and their hatred of her, but I found that it lacked some depth and felt a bit too fast paced. The amount of characters we have to get to know in terms of the court of the world, could get overwhelming at times.

I liked seeing the relationship Blaze has to power. The magic, the emotions, and the relationship she has with her power considering her history. But I felt frustrated with her sometimes. Reading Heir of Storms felt like a constant ember burning when I wanted it to catch into an inferno. Because of the pacing issue, I felt like it felt a bit disjointed. While it has an explosive ending, it feels almost like parts of a book with a lack of smooth transitions. It’s the beginning of a series, so there’s potential to grow, but I wanted to love this more.
