Review: Dating Dr. Dil by Nisha Sharma

Do you remember when you first heard of “The Taming of the Shrew”? For me, it was in a high school art class and I remember how differently the girls and the guys responded. That experience has stayed with me while watching “10 Things I Hate About You”. And so when I saw Dating Dr. Dil I was so excited! Keep reading this book review for my full thoughts.

Summary

Kareena Mann dreams of having a love story like her parents, but she prefers restoring her classic car to swiping right on dating apps. When her father announces he’s selling her mother’s home, Kareena makes a deal with him: he’ll gift her the house if she can get engaged in four months. Her search for her soulmate becomes impossible when her argument with Dr. Prem Verma, host of The Dr. Dil Show, goes viral. Now the only man in her life is the one she doesn’t want.

Dr. Prem Verma is dedicated to building a local community health center, but he needs to get donors with deep pockets. The Dr. Dil Show was doing just that, until his argument with Kareena went viral, and he’s left short changed. That’s when Kareena’s meddling aunties presented him with a solution: convince Kareena he’s her soulmate and they’ll fund his clinic.

Even though they have conflicting views on love-matches and arranged-matches, the more time Prem spends with Kareena, the more he begins to believe she’s the woman he wants to spend the rest of his life with. But for Prem and Kareena to find their happily ever after, they must admit that hate has turned into fate.

Review

(Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher. This has not impacted my review which is unbiased and honest.)

Dating Dr. Dil is a book that has made it to my favorite of Shakespeare romance retellings. I am also unbelievably excited for the rest of the series even though I know absolutely nothing about them. But I loved this diverse retelling in the way that Prem and Kareena’s relationship unfolds. Kareena was an instant favorite – the way she wants to find love, to not settle. While I felt like some aspects of the ending were a bit hasty, this was a book that I devoured.

I loved that there’s chemistry pouring off of them in the way they can each see each other. That way that someone can just seem to pierce through all your layers. Sometimes there’s a disconnect between our words and actions. Throughout, I kept wondering if they would make it. Because love certainly isn’t all butterflies, there’s hard work, tears and sweat, and heartbreak. But it’s worth it. Dating Dr. Dil certainly centers around Prem and Kareena. And they stole the show.

It’s a romance that is a retelling, but it’s also a book that examines expectations. While the ending felt a bit hasty in some elements, I thoroughly enjoyed this one and cannot wait for the next one. Find Dating Dr. Dil on Goodreads, Amazon, Indiebound, Bookshop.org & The Book Depository.
