Review: The Feywild Job by C.L. Polk

As a fan of Polk’s, I had high hopes for The Feywild Job. But something about it just wasn’t working for me. Keep reading this book review of The Feywild Job for my full thoughts.

Summary

Saeldian has sworn never to fall in love. That oath isn’t just a personal promise, but rather a magical pact, granting them powerful abilities. The only catch? They must never give their heart away—a deal that Saeldian is perfectly content with. They’ve seen firsthand how messy love can get.

Saeldian prefers their no-strings-attached life as a con artist, pulling off heists and leaving a trail of broken hearts behind them. But when a grift goes horribly wrong, they catch the eye of a mysterious patron with a job offer they can’t refuse.

The mission? Steal a gem called “The Kiss of Enduring Love” and return it to the Feywild. Simple enough, until Saeldian discovers their ex-partner, Kell—a charming bard—is part of the team.

The last time Saeldian saw Kell, things hardly ended on good terms. A kiss became a betrayal, leaving Kell hurt and confused for almost a decade. But Kell can’t just walk away—not when this job might finally be his ticket back to the Feywild.

Forced to work together again, their adventure takes them from high-society parties to Feywild couple’s therapy. But as Saeldian and Kell rekindle their chemistry, they realize the gem is much more than a fey bauble, and their simple heist has summoned powerful enemies. . . .

Review

(Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher. This has not impacted my review which is unbiased and honest.)

I love the idea of being forced work with our ex on a heist. What’s better than a heist and a group crew with history? I liked the premise of The Feywild Job, but the execution didn’t click with me. There were things I liked on paper, but didn’t follow me off the page. The setting was interesting and the vibes were there, but if you asked me to describe it to you afterwards, I’m not sure what I’d say. The Feywild Job just was something I read, but didn’t really click enough for me to be obsessed or unable to stop reading. I liked the idea of the heist, but then it fell a little flat where some things seemed possible and some a bit far fetched. There were times I thought we were clicking and it was going to get off the ground, but it never achieved lift off. And the romance didn’t work for me.

I was never on board with the ex character and I wasn’t really rooting for a reunion tour. I think what it sums up to be is that The Feywild Job was okay, but it wasn’t anything I thought about afterwards. I never got the impulse to tell my friends about it and instead found myself sometimes glazing over. It’s a shame because I really wanted to love this one with the D&D tie in and Polk as an author.
