I’ve been loving this D&D themed YA Contemporary series from Boyce. And Rolls and Rivalry is the next installment meets marching band and color guard! What a mashup! Keep reading this book review of Rolls and Rivalry for my full thoughts.
Summary
Questing for love . . .
Hazel Buchanan has her senior year mapped out: Win respect as color guard captain, kick off her first D&D campaign, and steer clear of distractions. But her plan takes a critical hit when Max—her former best friend and longtime crush—returns to town with drumsticks in hand and an unexplained chip on his shoulder.
Hazel and Max can’t help bickering every time they’re together, and thanks to meddling parents, he’s invading her D&D game too. As Dungeon Master, she’s ready to shut him down, but D&D has a way of bringing people together like nothing else. Is this rivalry masking something more? With dice rolling and emotions spinning, Hazel might be in for more than she planned . . .
Review

(Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher. This has not impacted my review which is unbiased and honest.)
Bickering and childhood crushes, rivalry and forced D&D games? Sign me up. Rolls and Rivalry is the latest installment in the Gaming and Romance series. With peak rivalry vibes, it delivers people who make us laugh, who get under our skin, and irritate us. Not only is there already an existing rivalry, but a ghost from the past which resurfaces to throw a wrench in. I loved the swoon of their relationship meets rivalry and the chemistry all over again. Plus who can say no to a fun game of D&D? Hazel has to figure out how to be a leader on the board and on the field.

Is being a good leader doing what we think we need to? Or is it to adapt our approach? In Rolls and Rivalry there’s also this exploration of Hazel’s family, their competitive streak, and how it creates this pressure. Rolls and Rivalry is a cute installment to the series with some of my favorite tropes! While I like the others a bit more than this one, Rolls and Rivalry is a solid YA Contemporary installment.
