IN THE KINGDOM OF AXARIA, a darkness rises.

- She—she had created this thing of beauty. This gift, this power—it was hers.

- He could feel the shadows billowing behind him like a cloak, slithering across every inch of his body as he tore through the trees beneath the star-speckled sky.

- The early pink-and-orange sun rays cast an almost liquefied glow over the gabled roofs of Axaris, the beginning sputters of smoke from ruddy terracotta chimney pots drifting toward the lightening sky in curls of white.

About the Author
Coco Ma is a Canadian-Chinese author and pianist. She wrote her first novel, Shadow Frost, at the age of 15. Since she began playing the piano at the age of five and a half, she has also performed on some of the world’s greatest concert stages and graduated with a pre-college diploma in piano performance from The Juilliard School in New York City. Currently, she studies at Yale University. When she isn’t practicing piano, writing, or studying, you might find her bingeing Netflix or eating cake. Lots of cake.
