I feel like a lot of times, books get buried. As someone who read over 365 books in 2018 alone, I know books got buried. And that’s just tragic. So every year I am going to go through the year again and find the books I still love a year later. This may still feel like a humongous list. And it is. But it’s the cream of the crop of what I read in 2017. It’s books I see the title and think, “Yes that was a great read!”. I am not including sequels, because you know I’m going to love those. And I’ll organize this by genre interest as well!
SF
Sleeping Giants – I cannot get over the unique writing style and giant mysteries
Saga Comics – I still think of these fondly, they might be my favorite comics
The Rule of Luck – This series is explosive, smoking hot, and only gets better
Unkindness of Ghosts – Talk about SF with tons of POC and racism thrown in
Fantasy
The Alchemists of Loom – Because there’s dragons, gold blood, and simmering romance
The Invisible Library – There are dragons, librarians, and quests for books
A Secret History of Witches – I love books about witches and family generational stories
The Fifth Season – NK Jemisin is a queen amongst us
Into the Drowning Deep – Give me killer mermaids any day
Creatures of Will and Temper – A Picture of Dorian Gray queer retelling? Yes.
Jade City – I need to read the sequel now. I can’t believe I haven’t read anything of Lee’s all in 2018
Girls Made of Snow and Glass – This book deserves so much more love for this queer retelling full of epic and complicated women
Traitor’s Blade – I love bands of noble minded heroes
Fiction
Little Fires Everywhere – This book means so much to me. I think this is probably going to be my only adult Fiction read favorite
Pachinko – Just kidding, I loved Pachinko and how much this tore my heart out
YA SF/F
The Seafarers Kiss – I want all the books about mermaids
The Abyss Surrounds Us – A gang of girls who hunt monsters will always hook me
The Falconer – I haven’t read the books after this, but I want to in 2019
Six of Crows – You know I’d have to include this YA giant
The Bear and the Nightingale – Such a great fantasy set in Russia with corrupt priests
The November Girl – This book kicked off my Lydia Kang obsession and I’ve not been steered wrong once
The Reader – This book will make every list I can put it on. A book that celebrates the power of reading
The Hollow Girl – Revenge, witches, and dealing with trauma
Forest of a Thousand Lanterns – Kicking off the dark fantasy anti-heroines off strong
Wild Beauty – My favorite Anna Marie McLemore book which is a thing of beauty
Girl from Everywhere – I would love to travel in this world where a map can take me there instantly
Rebel Seoul – Everything my little SF obsessed heart could want
Girl with the Red Balloon – Balloon magic meets World War II
The Bone Witch – I am obsessed with necromancy
YA Fiction
The Hate U Give – Same with this mega hit
Geekerella – This book kicked off my Poston obsession
I also really loved Girls Made of Snow and Glass!
YES! I was just thinking about how I wanted to re-read it
This is such an amazing list! I’m still in love with The Bone Witch, The Bear and the Nightingale and Six of Crows – no matter how many years go by, I’ll always love them. <3 You're the second person who mentions how awesome Creatures of Will & Temper is. I’m so happy I got the book. Must read it ASAP!
Happy readings! 😉
