Review: Yin Yang Love Song by Lauren Kung Jessen

Yin Yang Love Song reminds me of Penelope. If you love that film, then you have to read this one. It’s a story about being afraid, holding ourselves back, and giving power to our fears. As a fan of Lauren Kung Jessen, I knew I had to read this one. Keep reading this book review of Yin Yang Love Song for my full thoughts.

Summary

Chinese herbalist Chryssy Hua Williams never actually believed in the Hua family curse. But after Break-Up #9, Chryssy stopped laughing. Now she and her aunties run a special healing retreat center for the broken-hearted. After all, there’s nothing a proper cup of herbal tea can’t fix…but Chryssy’s innocent run-in with celebrity cellist and bad boy Vin Chao has everyone brewing about a different kind of tea. So he offers her a deal: they’ll fake-date, he’ll “break” her heart (and increase ticket sales), and in return, he’ll promote her business.

It’s like Chryssy’s whole cursed love life has been leading up to this moment. But all it takes is one kiss—and a whole lot of unexpected chemistry—to land both of them in hot water . . .

Review

(Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher. This has not impacted my review which is unbiased and honest.)

Yin Yang Love Song is a dual POV romance story which will steal your heart. If you’ve ever been afraid in love – and who hasn’t – then you have to read this one. I loved the family aspect and characters in Yin Yang Love Song. At the same time, I was drawn most to Chryssy’s character development. While it’s easy to describe Yin Yang Love Song as fake dating, it’s really a story about facing our fears. About realizing that we can close ourselves off, that we can hold ourselves back even when we think we aren’t, and let our fears dictate our actions.

For Chryssy, is the fear of the curse, of the breakup, stopping her from loving? Stopping her from opening up her heart? And for Vin he is so concerned with the next success that he doesn’t allow himself any downtime, any rest, any recovery. If there’s something I’ve learned in the last four years, it’s that in order to be the most successful we have to rest. Our brain, our hearts, our bodies need the reprieves, the rest, the recovery. You can work hard, but you also have to rest hard. Yin Yang Love Song is also about how in a relationship not everything is perfect.

There are times when we might need to take a moment, to pause, to re-commit again. Without spoilers, I can just say that if you loved the last scenes of Penelope, then you will enjoy the themes of Yin Yang Love Song.
