Review: Verity Guild by Mai Corland

Verity Guild combines murder mystery and Roman inspired fantasy. It’s a book that builds with stakes, action, and romance. I cannot wait for the sequel! Keep reading this book review of Verity Guild for my full thoughts.

Summary

High Priestess Kerasea Vestal has spent her life hiding the truth―that she’s the last surviving heir of the magical bloodline the republic slaughtered. One wrong step could be fatal. But when a senator is brutally killed and a temple blade is found at the scene, all eyes turn to her.

Praetorian Torren Morvane has made a career of dragging liars into the light, and Kerasea is the one person he’s vowed to ruin. But locked on a mountain with a murderer, scheming senators, and a prophecy of death, he’s forced to work at her side. The closer he gets, the more dangerous the truth―and their attraction―becomes.

With traitors closing in and a nation on the verge of shattering, Kerasea and Torren must risk everything to uncover the real killer…even if it means trusting their sworn enemy.

Review

(Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher. This has not impacted my review which is unbiased and honest.)

Verity Guild is brimming with intrigue. Kerasea has to hide who she is while also investigating with her own motivations. Combined with Torren they form an unlikely alliance full of mistrust and sparks. Verity Guild is devoted to character development and we witness them break down their misconceptions and prejudices. The lies they’re telling each other and themselves. There’s a fantastic slow burn romance component which will have you waiting anxiously for book two. When people start dropping like flies, both Torren and Kerasea are scrambling to figure out who and what is going on.

There’s plenty of political intrigue and while the murder is certainly at the forefront, I think the politics are the next culprit. Everyone will fall, it’s just a matter of how high. The politics and the world building only continue to build as learn more about the foundations, the cracks, and the rot. Verity Guild is this slow burn of a first book with plenty of promises!
