Review: The Wind Weaver by Julie Johnson

The Wind Weaver is for fans of elemental magic, coming into our own power, and plenty of tension. It’s the beginning of a series that I will be fully sat for. I love the idea of magic users who embody an element! Keep reading this book review of The Wind Weaver for my full thoughts.

Summary

Fear of maegic plagues war-torn Anwyvn. Halflings like Rhya Fleetwood are killed on sight. But Rhya’s execution is interrupted by an unexpected savior—one far more terrifying than her would-be killers. The mysterious and mercenary Commander Scythe. In the clutches of this new enemy, Rhya finds herself fighting for her life in the barren reaches of the Northlands. Yet the farther she gets from home, the more she learns that nothing is as it seems—not her fearsome captor, not the blight that ravages her dying realm, not even herself.

For Rhya is no ordinary halfling. The strange birthmark on her chest and the wind she instinctively calls forth means she is a Remnant, one of four souls scattered across Anwyvn, fated to restore the balance of maegic…or die trying.

But mastering the power inside her is only the beginning. Desire for the Commander—a man she can never trust, a man with plans of his own—burns just as fiercely as the tempests beating against her rib cage for release. Rhya must choose: smother the flames…or let them consume her.

Review

(Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher. This has not impacted my review which is unbiased and honest.)

The Wind Weaver brings me back to my nostalgic fantasy days. It brings me back to elemental magic, to realizing there’s this power within us, and the journey to discovering our power. If you love characters who have to discover themselves and their magic, this is for you! Characteristically, The Wind Weaver is a story about embracing our power. It serves as a metaphor to embracing a piece of ourselves and not just trying to control it. Alongside this magical journey there’s plenty of romantic tension and “will they won’t they” energy.

There’s plenty of scenes of hate banter, of being so frustrated with someone because they won’t protect themselves. Everyone can see the writing on the walls, it just takes our favorite heroes a bit of time. The Wind Weaver sets up a fabulous premise for this series and I am so excited for the sequel. There’s court politics, discovering found family, and some side character introductions which will have you kicking and screaming. The last third ramps up the action for a very satisfying conclusion until book two which had me choked up!
