I had the highest hopes for The River Has Roots. And this novella took all my expectations and exceeded them. Talk about a novella that absolutely captivated me. Keep reading this book review of The River Has Roots for my full thoughts.

Summary

In the small town of Thistleford, on the edge of Faerie, dwells the mysterious Hawthorn family.

There, they tend and harvest the enchanted willows and honour an ancient compact to sing to them in thanks for their magic. None more devotedly than the family’s latest daughters, Esther and Ysabel, who cherish each other as much as they cherish the ancient trees.

But when Esther rejects a forceful suitor in favor of a lover from the land of Faerie, not only the sisters’ bond but also their lives will be at risk…

Review

(Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher. This has not impacted my review which is unbiased and honest.)

The River Has Roots is a whimsical experience. If you love stories that feel like fairy and folk tales. That transport you and give you that nostalgic feel while being unique, this is for you. There’s elements you can recognize and El-Mohtar breathes new life. It’s a world of musical magic and I love the idea of grammar and magic – how it shapes the world. The world building and premise are enchanting. There’s nothing I love more than a book about sisterhood. And The River Has Roots brings these sister alive, the bond that transcends the love and life we have in our hearts.

But what I loved even more is the audiobook production with the sound effects and music. If you love audiobooks, then this is a must. I had heard about the effects and knew I wanted to listen to this one! And I am not disappointed. The River Has Roots breathed new life into my week. I devoured it in a few days because I was captivated. For each heartbreak, it put it back together again.
