The Dragon Has Some Complaints is, hands down, my favorite John Wiswell book. It has the humor and wryness from Someone You Can Build a Nest In combined with dragons. What a stellar combo! Keep reading this book review of The Dragon Has Some Complaints for my full thoughts.
Summary
Garrodigh was once a four-headed dragon, among the most powerful in Kardoša. After an unfortunate incident, he now has three heads, one stump, and a daily whirlwind of internal bickering. Centerhead wants to rain death upon all humanity, Bottomhead is like a feral cat, and Upperhead is under the delicate delusion that he is, in fact, human.
When a nearby battle goes awry, Garrodigh sneaks into an elite dragon rider academy, pretending to be tame to get free food and a warm bed. Lucky for him, rider Rania Albright is desperate enough for a dragon of her own that she overlooks his eccentricities.
As Garrodigh recovers under Rania’s care, all three heads start to turn, for the first time, in the same direction. Each wants to protect her from the invaders who killed their fourth head—the same invaders who seek to conquer Kardoša. When the academy comes under attack, can this wild dragon and his wilder rider save their homeland together?
Review

(Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher. This has not impacted my review which is unbiased and honest.)
The Dragon Has Some Complaints is charming from head to toe. With three different personalities, there’s this beautiful and hilarious character work. Each of these dragon heads feels so different and there’s great banter between them. Plus the human side characters are detailed and have the right amount of intrigue. But The Dragon Has Some Complaints illustrates how we can dispel our misconceptions and find a true sense of friendship. It’s also about the ways we can believe in ourselves and recover. We are so set in being alone that to reconcile the ones around us and these unlikely potential connections, is terrifying.
But what would happen if we were open to the new? To know that we can lean on someone, that if we take care of someone, care about someone, they might care about us too. The Dragon Has Some Complaints is an easy and charming read. It is simultaneously about finding a home and something to lose. That loss can so deeply scar us and convince us we shouldn’t try again, but we always should open up our heart. The tone of The Dragon Has Some Complaints strikes the best balance between humor and heart.
