Review: The Devils by Joe Abercrombie

This is my first Joe Abercrombie story and it’s fun, full of cast of characters, and gave me Suicide Squad vibes. The Devils is an entertaining addition to the fantasy genre. For fans of expansive casts and intriguing worlds, this is for you. Keep reading this book review of The Devils for my full thoughts.

Summary

Brother Diaz has been summoned to the Sacred City, where he is certain a commendation and grand holy assignment awaits him. But his new flock is made up of unrepentant murderers, practitioners of ghastly magic, and outright monsters, and the mission he is tasked with will require bloody measures from them all in order to achieve its righteous ends.

Elves lurk at our borders and hunger for our flesh, while greedy princes care for nothing but their own ambitions and comfort. With a hellish journey before him, it’s a good thing Brother Diaz has the devils on his side.

Review

(Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher. This has not impacted my review which is unbiased and honest.)

What other worlds can you have elves, vampires, and werewolves? The Devils introduces readers into a world of these monsters, creatures, and dangers come alive. It’s a story about fighting fire with fire and in this sense fighting devils with devils? The Devils reminded me of Suicide Squad with unconventional recruitment techniques and a whole host of powers. I couldn’t figure out which character I was more interested by throughout the story. While I thought The Devils was a fast paced adventure, I wish I had been pulled deeper to some of the characters. Because there’s a whole host and we have this omniscient narrator, I was missing that deep character obsession.

The Devils balances humor and action and is sure to appeal to fantasy fans who want a bit of gore and laughs. There’s this large cast and sprinkles of genuine vulnerability which I deeply enjoyed. But at some points, I felt like it moved a bit too fast so that we couldn’t feel the stakes enough. The world is fascinating with tons of magical entry points, I just wish it had a bit more space sometimes and character development.
