For fans of complicated marriage stories and fantasy, this is for you. Odd Spirits takes the idea of supernatural powers and combines it with what happens if a married couple had a fight. It’s a fun novella for fans of Evocation. Keep reading this book review of Odd Spirits for my full thoughts.
Summary
It takes a lot of commitment to make a marriage between a modern ceremonial magician and a tarot witch work, but when a malevolent entity takes up residence in Rhys and Moira’s home, their love will be pushed to the limits.
Brewing up a solution is easier said than done when your magical styles are polar opposites; throw a psychic ex and a secret society in the mix, and things are bound to get messy.
Review
(Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher. This has not impacted my review which is unbiased and honest.)
Ever since Evocation I have loved Rhys and Moira. That character develops and illustrates their marriage and their heart. But in this prequel novella, what happens when they have a disagreement? Not the easy what do we have for dinner, but the doubts and insecurities bleeding into our waking hours. And what happened if these very real fears were experienced by witches and magicians? Odd Spirits is a charming novella. It’s about working through our (supernatural) problems together.

We love to see married couples who have these real arguments. These moments when they aren’t sure if they should be together. Where the doubts we feel permeate. And being a prequel is a perfect setting for Moira and Rhys to navigate their doubts. When differences go from quirky to problems. Odd Spirits is about what happens when we don’t know how to approach these issues. How easy it is to be defensive, to not let ourselves be vulnerable. It feels supernatural and refreshing!
