Review: Costumes for Time Travelers by A.R. Capetta

I will always read about time travelers. So when I saw Costumes for Time Travelers I knew I had to read this one! It doesn’t hurt that it’s from a fave author of mine! Keep reading this book review of Costumes for Time Travelers for my full thoughts.

Summary

Anyone who has hiked through time knows the town of Pocket. It’s the place travelers first reach after they stumble away from their hometime, passing through on their way to any other when. To Calisto, Pocket is home. They love their grandmother’s shop, which is filled with clothes from every era that are used to make costumes for time travelers. Calisto has no intention of traveling—it’s too dangerous. For Fawkes, traveling is life. He put on time boots when he was young and has been stumbling through eras ever since. When he floats into Pocket, Calisto meets him for the first time, though Fawkes has seen Calisto—in glimpses of what hasn’t happened yet. He’s also seen the villains chasing them both. Now Calisto and Fawkes must rush—from Shakespeare’s London to ancient Crete to California on the eve of a millennium—to save Pocket, and travelers, from being erased.

Review

(Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher. This has not impacted my review which is unbiased and honest.)

I love a good time traveling story and Costumes for Time Travelers has such a unique take on it. It’s like a combination of portal fantasy, timeline manipulation, and this concept of timelines which need to be protected. So it’s some of my favorite concepts all mashed into one. Then we have Pocket which is like this time traveling nexus town where we meet Calisto. I’m a sucker for a good ‘out of order’ meeting and this fits the bill! One world building idea I especially loved was the concept of costumes for time traveling.

So much of fashion is not only about expression, but also about security. About blending in and they say so much about a society. The ways that a costume, or a bad costume, can give us away in an instant. My favorite element has to be the world which I’m still thinking about. Costumes for Time Travelers is a fantastic adventure story where our characters fall into danger and chase scenes. It also explores choices and destiny particularly in a time travel concept. If we can go back in time, or to the future, how much of our daily, of the present, are choices we can change? Costumes for Time Travelers is a great mix of fantastic world, great themes, and action which I really enjoyed.
