Today I’m taking the opportunity today to share my outfit inspiration for Ephyra from There Will Come a Darkness. We were tasked with picking our favorite character, which was a tall order since I love so many of them, and then having creative reign. So many ideas ran through my head. Originally I was going to do something food related, then exercise related, then I got hooked on Ephyra’s red cloak. Today I’m sharing clothing items inspired by Ephyra’s card.
There Will Come a Darkness
For generations, the Seven Prophets guided humanity. Using their visions of the future, they ended wars and united nations―until the day, one hundred years ago, when the Prophets disappeared.
All they left behind was one final, secret prophecy, foretelling an Age of Darkness and the birth of a new Prophet who could be the world’s salvation . . . or the cause of its destruction. As chaos takes hold, five souls are set on a collision course:
A prince exiled from his kingdom.
A ruthless killer known as the Pale Hand.
A once-faithful leader torn between his duty and his heart.
A reckless gambler with the power to find anything or anyone.
And a dying girl on the verge of giving up.
One of them―or all of them―could break the world. Will they be savior or destroyer?

Ephyra
Maybe you haven’t seen what I’m trying to emulate. The pre-order incentive for There Will Come a Darkness was a set of scrying cards. The character I am focusing on is the bottom, The Assassin, my beloved Ephyra. If you wanted to see them, I posted a photo of them on my Instagram because Fierce Reads was kind enough to send me a set!
Ephyra is motivated by secrets, her sister, and her unique magic. Incredibly nimble, quick thinking, and dedicated, she is determined to try to save her sister at whatever the cost.
Outfit Inspiration
So for this, I wanted to keep it relatively easy to find, just in case you wanted to cosplay the look! I was going to try to buy the items myself, but that gorgeous cloak wouldn’t arrive in time. I knew the first signature look would be that red cloak. Can I just say that whole aesthetic for the book is totally on brand for me?
This cloak is stunning, supposed to be very warm, and handmade from Etsy. I am seriously sitting with this in my shopping cart and considering buying it for myself for Christmas. I mean it gives you all the Red Riding Hood vibes, and imagine how it would swish!
We All Need More Shoes
The next element I knew would be crucial were Ephyra’s red boots. I am shocked I don’t have any red boots like this. It is so on brand for me, that I am seriously thinking about buying this whole outfit. If anyone was wondering, these are the wide calf edition because that’s the type of boots I need. I mean, this outfit so far is already so gorgeous.
Then I thought, but what if you want a low key, casual Ephyra outfit. While I was looking up these taller boots, I found tons of options for booties and liked these more casual, but also very useful boots.
Plus am I the only one who has always wanted to have a pair of combat boots, but hasn’t taken the plunge yet? And aren’t these gorgeous? I can just imagine how they would look on my feet. You could also style this with some black ripped skinny jeans, the red cloak/cape and these shoes! Divine.
And then finally the black dress. This was the only element I felt that is really missing. All the dresses I found were missing that red trim, so even in this dress from H&M you’d have to add it. Plus I was really looking for something that would be a comfortable material and have enough material to flow.
The Dress
So this dress would need the modifications of a red ribbon, which you could really play with. Typical red satin or you could find a lace or brocade. This dress doesn’t hang like I want it to, but I have a dress that does, but I couldn’t find it again. Basically you want an A-Line Dress and the one I have was called a Skater dress I think. What would be very cool is if you had elements or stitching on the top of the dress, which you can’t see in the photo.
And then I thought but what if you wanted to incorporate the elements into a more formal occasion. This has the ribbon I wanted, but with a little more formal touches – the mesh and the fabric choices. Of course, you have to wear the cloak to whatever party you’re going to.
If you wanted to make this into a more androgynous look, what I would do is get a really wonderfully tailored black suit (think Loki vibes) and then put red satin ribbons accents. Maybe around your collar, or the bottom trim, with that red cloak of course. Where can’t you wear a coat?
I hope you’ve enjoyed my take on Ephyra’s outfit, these were just the pieces I was most likely to pick up myself. Let me know if you have the perfect materials or clothes! Find There Will Come a Darkness on Goodreads, Amazon, Indiebound & The Book Depository.
