I was geeking out over the world building and queer characters in Beyond the Black Door. So you know I jumped on the chance to host a character interview, my first ever!
Beyond the Black Door
Kamai was warned never to open the black door, but she didn’t listen …
Everyone has a soul. Some are beautiful gardens, others are frightening dungeons. Soulwalkers―like Kamai and her mother―can journey into other people’s souls while they sleep.
But no matter where Kamai visits, she sees the black door. It follows her into every soul, and her mother has told her to never, ever open it.
When Kamai touches the door, it is warm and beating, like it has a pulse. When she puts her ear to it, she hears her own name whispered from the other side. And when tragedy strikes, Kamai does the unthinkable: she opens the door.
A.M. Strickland’s imaginative dark fantasy features court intrigue and romance, a main character coming to terms with her asexuality, and twists and turns as a seductive mystery unfolds that endangers not just Kamai’s own soul, but the entire kingdom …
Character Interview – Vehyn
What’s a story that you wouldn’t tell your parents, but you’d share with your best friend?
I neither need nor want this thing you call a best friend, nor do I have parents. But if we take parents to mean the place from which I came, I wouldn’t want to pass along the news that I’m more intrigued than I should be by the mortal girl, Kamai. She’s not a friend, but I know her best, and I’d gladly inform her how I feel about her, mostly just to watch her squirm.
What are your top three songs played on your ipod or phone?
An ipod? Phone? How mortal of you. I like the sound of a held breath, waiting to be released. Silence, you could say, if you lack imagination. I particularly like it if the breath in question is Kamai’s. What’s that—you wanted three things? You don’t get them.
When you want to be alone or need some time to think, where do you go?
Nowhere. I’m almost always alone and I’ve never required time to be capable of thought.
Favorite and least favorite snacks?
I like Kamai’s smile when she’s feeling wicked. I don’t like her disregard.
If you had to get revenge on someone, how would you do it?
I would take everything from them from the inside out, starting with their soul.
What is your astrological sign or Harry Potter house?
I haven’t the faintest idea what you mean. Oh, someone is telling me that I’m obviously an Aries and a Slytherin, whatever those are.

The story sounds interesting. I am not sure about adding to my TBR, but Fantasy is my favorite genre.
Yep! I really liked the idea of soul houses for sure!
Haha, I loved this character interview! I’ve still to read Beyond the Black Door but this peek into this character is definitely piquing my interest! I loved the ‘how mortal of you’ answer
lol I love how in depth Adrianne got into the character mentality!
