As someone who absolutely loved The Bone Spindle, I knew I had to read The Severed Thread. And I shrieked at the end. This is a stunning second book and I already need book three ok? Keep reading this book review for my full thoughts.
Summary
Clever, bookish Fi and her brash, ax-wielding partner Shane are back in this action packed sequel to the bestselling The Bone Spindle, the gender-flipped Sleeping Beauty retelling, perfect for fans of Sorcery of Thorns and The Cruel Prince.
Fi has awakened the sleeping prince, but the battle for Andar is far from over. The Spindle Witch, the Witch Hunters, and Fi’s own Butterfly Curse all stand between them and happily ever after.
Shane has her partner’s back. But she’s in for the fight of her life against Red, the right hand of the Spindle Witch who she’s also, foolishly, hellbent on saving.
Briar Rose would do anything to restore his kingdom. But there’s a darkness creeping inside him—a sinister bond to the Spindle Witch he can’t escape.
All hopes of restoring Andar rest on deciphering a mysterious book code, finding the hidden city of the last Witches, and uncovering a secret lost for centuries—one that just might hold the key to the Spindle Witch’s defeat. If they can all survive that long…
Review
(Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher. This has not impacted my review which is unbiased and honest.)
When I tell you I was excited for The Severed Thread, I don’t think you understand how much. As someone who grew up on adventure movies and treasure hunting, Vedder’s series gives a serotonin boost every time I think of it. The Bone Spindle is one of the most unique, adventure filled, and packed with charming characters book I’ve read. So my expectations for The Severed Thread were astronomical. And 100% met. This sequel is action packed from the beginning to the very last page.
I absolutely adored the treasure hunting adventures and quest. It’s a solid element that if you love, you have to read this series. The action swept me away and I finished this book days before I thought I would. But what makes it even sweeter are the characters. Shane and Red? Talk about a perfect ship with my two favorite character types – grumpy girl not sure if she can ever let anyone in again plus a protector ax wielding warrior. Smitten.
And I will always love my intellectual babies Fi and Briar Rose. Which brings me to my next favorite thing about The Severed Thread – the character development. I was so impressed with how much all of our favorites will have to learn. It asks us if we believe people are able to change. If curses can be broken. With all these feelings against our ‘better instincts’, walls we put up around ourselves, what will remain at the end. How afraid we can be to tell the ones we love the fears within us. This group cast has a sense of camaraderie that legit brought tears to my eyes.
Plus that title, the bonds that are severed between people multiplied throughout the book? Brilliant. This second book is a masterpiece to an already epic series.
