Review: Unravel Me by Tahereh Mafi

Look, I’ve given Unravel Me and the Shatter Me series another go. And while I enjoyed this one a bit more, I still don’t get the Warner love. What am I missing?? Keep reading this book review for my full thoughts on Unravel Me.

Summary

It should have taken Juliette a single touch to kill Warner. But his mysterious immunity to her deadly power has left her shaken, wondering why her ultimate defense mechanism failed against the person she most needs protection from.

She and Adam were able to escape Warner’s clutches and join up with a group of rebels, many of whom have powers of their own. Juliette will finally be able to actively fight against The Reestablishment and try to fix her broken world. And perhaps these new allies can help her shed light on the secret behind Adam’s—and Warner’s—immunity to her killer skin.

Review

I do not get the Warner love yet. I know that some people said wait till book three, and I feel us getting closer, but we are not there yet. We’re getting there, I guess, but we are not there yet so I feel like I’m in a separate universe. In Unravel Me, we are leading up to this big action, but it was a slow build until we got to the BIG action. With more of a X-Men vibe in Unravel Me, because we get to know more people with powers, we are asked a bit more about what will it take to be ‘powerful’? Useful? Will we let others keep experimenting, keep testing us, keep pushing us, all in order to be the most useful?

The world of Shatter Me is piquing my interest more as we see more of the world around us. We see their plights, their talents, in the scope of the broader world. As it asks us if we become the very forces we ran from. I felt for Juliette here, just like in the first, but I wouldn’t say I’m fully on her team yet. I am also not really on Warner team yet even though he totally ‘loves’ her it feels a bit like obsession especially when I wonder how much of it is ‘real’. In this love triangle, both love interests see her as different things, they represent these different avenues and versions of herself. While I’m not fully on board this train, I’m certainly not saying I wouldn’t read book three!
