Review: Trial of the Sun Queen by Nisha J. Tuli

Trial of the Sun Queen is a book I’ve seen a lot recently. Now that the series is finished, I’m finally starting it! And while this one had an abrupt ending, I am definitely reading the next one! Keep reading this book review of Trial of the Sun Queen for my full thoughts.

Summary

Lor has endured twelve long years of torment under the Aurora King’s rule. Her only desire is to escape and pay him back for every moment of misery she’s endured.

When a surprise release finds her in the hands of the rival Sun King, Lor is thrust into the spotlight as she competes against nine other Tributes for the role of queen. If she wins his heart, she’ll earn her freedom and finally get her revenge.

But Lor doesn’t belong in the Sun Queen Trials. Not only does she not understand why she was freed, she isn’t a citizen of the Sun King’s court. The other Tributes resent her presence and will stop at nothing to ensure Lor is removed from the competition, permanently.

Now Lor must win, because if she loses, she dies. Or worse, she’ll be returned to the evil—and now vengeful—Aurora King.

Review

(Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher. This has not impacted my review which is unbiased and honest.)

Lor’s story is one of survival. If you like deadly competitions, then you’ll have to read Trial of the Sun Queen. To be honest, we’re kind of thrown headfirst into the trials. In terms of pacing, I felt like Trial of the Sun Queen could have used a bit of a slower start and that cliffhanger at the end?! Basically, I enjoyed the middle, but both the beginning and the ending had me reeling a bit. Before we really got to know Lor, she was whisked away and thrown to the wolves. And don’t even get me started on the ending. That’s partly why I need to read Rule of the Aurora King.

The actual middle part of Trial of the Sun Queen has an almost Survivor meets Dating Show with deadly stakes. And there’s more than meets the eye. You get the sense, from the very beginning, that there will be more reveals than you can even imagine. I’m excited to see how these mysteries will be resolved in the next three books. I liked Lor as a character. She’s resourceful, kind, and clever. It’s an entertaining book that felt unique and I’m interest in the next one! Discussion

What is a series where book one was a huge cliffhanger?
