Review: The Faraway Inn by Sarah Beth Durst

I loved Sarah Beth Durst’s adult fantasy so I needed to read this YA book. And The Faraway Inn was so cute. I need to immediately get a copy for my mom! Keep reading this book review of The Faraway Inn for my full thoughts.

Summary

Sixteen-year-old Calisa is desperate for a change of scenery after her lying ex ruins her perfect Brooklyn summer. When her parents suggest she head to rural Vermont to help her great-aunt run her cozy bed and breakfast for a few months, she jumps at the chance.

But when Calisa arrives at the B&B, she’s shocked to find a rundown inn with only a handful of guests. And to make matters worse, upon meeting with her great-aunt it quickly becomes clear that Calisa was not invited. Auntie Zee is determined to keep anyone from messing with her beloved inn…even if it is clear she needs the help.

To earn her keep, Calisa sets to work fixing up the inn, enlisting extra help from the groundskeeper’s (handsome) son. But the longer she stays, the more it becomes evident that there is something strange about the B&B—and its residents. Something almost…otherworldly.

The inn is keeping a magical secret—but to protect the place she’s come to love, Calisa must unravel the truth of it, and her aunt, before it’s too late.

Review

(Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher. This has not impacted my review which is unbiased and honest.)

The magical world in The Faraway Inn is charming. It’s one that promises secrets and mystery as Calisa figures out what makes this inn so different. There are complications aplenty as Calisa tries to figure out why her aunt doesn’t want her help. The Faraway Inn is a story about finding your voice and where you belong. The world has all these ideas about what we want and what we can handle, but what if we don’t even know? The Faraway Inn is a testament to magic in the small moments, in the foods, in the smells, in the comfort of a listening ear. In someone who takes a moment to see us for who we are.

If you love contemporary fantasy you have to read The Faraway Inn. It’s a slice of whimsy away from home and is utterly charming. At its core it looks at how hard it is to accept help from others, to accept change, and to accept ourselves. I love how it is about how we have to accept help, how we have to be the one who shows up for ourselves. Find The Faraway Inn on Goodreads, Storygraph, Bookshop. org, Blackwells, & Libro. fm.
