Review: Silver & Smoke by Helen Scheuerer

What can I say? Silver & Smoke was one of my most anticipated sequels this year. And it was so good! Talk about satisfying! Keep reading this book review of Silver & Smoke for my full thoughts.

Summary

Alchemist. Poisoner. Reluctant Queen.

Wren Embervale knows her duty demands a crown, even if it means a strategic betrothal to the influential Lord Darian Devereux. Their arranged marriage promises the formidable army she needs to wrestle her kingdom from the clutches of the tyrannical usurper, Silas. Yet, Wren’s heart still belongs to Torj Elderbrock, her soul-bonded Warsword.

Torn between her pragmatic alliance and the visceral pull of her bond with Torj, Wren must navigate a treacherous landscape of courtly intrigue and looming war. As Silas’s shadow alchemy tightens its grip on the midrealms and a creeping poison steals Torj’s strength, Wren’s carefully constructed facade begins to crack.

Can she play the dutiful fiancée to secure her throne, while her body and soul yearns for the warrior who would lay down his life for her? Or will the tangled threads of political necessity leave her kingdom—and her heart—in ashes?

Review

(Disclaimer: I received this book from the author. This has not impacted my review which is unbiased and honest.)

Silver & Smoke does not let up. It picks right up after Thorns & Fire with our heart in our throats. Wren and Torj have been through it y’all. And Scheuerer does not even let them have a second here. Considering the trust and revelations in Thorns & Fire, Silver & Smoke is full of sparks. Not only is it incredibly spicy and steamy, it’s a book about wondering what we would do for the people we love. But Scheuerer also explores what makes a great ruler. Is it someone who is so driven by the country that they would do anything? Even carve our their own heart? Or is it someone who surrounds themselves with the best people and follows their heart?

Being dual POV is just even more emotional torture here. This series ender is so satisfying as we are transported to the battle field, to inner meeting rooms, and to the brink of death. We can try so hard to keep everyone safe. We can love them as hard as we can, but what happens when that isn’t enough? Silver & Smoke is a book you will have to read if you’ve read the series to see what happens. I knew I had to read it immediately and now I can dive back into The Legends of Thezmarr. Find Silver & Smoke on Goodreads, Storygraph, Amazon, Bookshop. org, Blackwells, & Libro. fm.
