Silver in the Mist is a story about loyalty and friendship. For fans of YA fantasy and complex heroines – this one’s for you! I loved Devlin’s character journey as she has to figure out what stand she will take. Keep reading this book review for my full thoughts.
Summary
Eight years ago, everything changed for Devlin: Her country was attacked. Her father was killed. And her mother became the Whisperer of Aris, the head of the spies, retreating into her position away from everyone… even her daughter.
Joining the spy ranks herself, Dev sees her mother only when receiving assignments. She wants more, but she understands the peril their country, Aris, is in. The malevolent magic force of The Mists is swallowing Aris’s edges, their country is vulnerable to another attack from their wealthier neighbor, and the magic casters who protect them from both are burning out.
Dev has known strength and survival her whole life, but with a dangerous new assignment of infiltrating the royal court of their neighbor country Cerena to steal the magic they need, she learns that not all that glitters is weak. And not all stories are true.
Review
(Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher. This has not impacted my review which is unbiased and honest.)
Silver in the Mist is a fantasy spy story. If you’ve been searching for covert missions, sneaking around, and undercover missions, add this to your TBR. The action is alone to keep you reading. There are court politics in a world where no one wants to give up their power. Silver in the Mist is a setting full of enemies and alliances from years back, but is there a way forward? One that doesn’t end in our destruction? But what I loved the most was the character journey of Devlin.
Not only was I going to love a MC with a complicated absent mother figure (who just so happens to be the leader of the spies), but also Devlin has to really figure out who she wants to be. What her actions say about the entire mission, but also about herself. We can be so caught up in doing what we were told to, we don’t realize what it says about us. Silver in the Mist is a story about loyalty and ethics. It’s also about if we can move forward from the past. If we keep repeating the same mistake, we will be doomed.

And fear never is a good motivator. Another theme I loved which Silver in the Mist discussed was the importance of art. In these survival stories, where magic is a tool, we can often forget about the magic in the magic. Overall, Silver in the Mist is a fantastic fantasy that you have to read if you love spy stories and interesting magic!
