Review: Fevered Star by Rebecca Roanhorse

Black Sun was a book that instantly lodged itself in my heart. Talk about an epic fantasy with multiple POV done right. And so I was so excited for Fevered Star! Keep reading this book review for my full thoughts.

Summary

The great city of Tova is shattered. The sun is held within the smothering grip of the Crow God’s eclipse, but a comet that marks the death of a ruler and heralds the rise of a new order is imminent.

The Meridian: a land where magic has been codified and the worship of gods suppressed. How do you live when legends come to life, and the faith you had is rewarded?

As sea captain Xiala is swept up in the chaos and currents of change, she finds an unexpected ally in the former Priest of Knives. For the Clan Matriarchs of Tova, tense alliances form as far-flung enemies gather and the war in the heavens is reflected upon the earth.

And for Serapio and Naranpa, both now living avatars, the struggle for free will and personhood in the face of destiny rages. How will Serapio stay human when he is steeped in prophecy and surrounded by those who desire only his power? Is there a future for Naranpa in a transformed Tova without her total destruction?

Review

While the pacing felt a bit slower to me in Fevered Star than Black Sun, I was entranced. Falling back in love with the magic system is an unparalleled experience. It’s a world of sacrifices, loyalty, and power. The betrayal as we are slowly wrapped up in this world of promises and darkness. Listening to this on audiobook was another special experience. I love multiple narrators and Christian Barillas, Darrell Dennis, Cara Gee, Nicole Lewis & Shaun Taylor-Corbett did a fantastic job. It’s such a handy tool to figure out who each character is – on a practical level – but even more, each of them are able to infuse the characters.

To have their voice in our head and their indignation, rage, and naked ambition. In Fevered Star, I was struck by how much planning and the masterful writing of Roanhorse. To see all these threads which are slowly raveling together as the trap coils even tighter. These characters unfurl and are pushed to the brink, and I cannot wait for the next one. It’ll be another audiobook purchase for me! Find Fevered Star on Goodreads, Amazon, Indiebound, Bookshop.org, The Book Depository, Libro.fm, Google Play.

I’m looking for more multiple narrator audiobook recommendations!
