Review: Automatic Noodle by Annalee Newitz

Automatic Noodle was such a fun and wonderful novella. It manages to be a story that balances science fiction and cozyiness. If you’re a fan of robots and science fiction stories, this is for you. Keep reading this book review of Automatic Noodle for my full thoughts.

Summary

While San Francisco rebuilds from the chaos of war, a group of food service bots in an abandoned ghost kitchen take over their own delivery app account. They rebrand as a neighborhood lunch spot and start producing some of the tastiest hand-pulled noodles in the city. But there’s just one problem. Someone―or something―is review bombing the restaurant’s feedback page with fake “bad service” reports. Can the bots find the culprit before their ratings plummet and destroy everything they created?

Review

(Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher. This has not impacted my review which is unbiased and honest.)

Automatic Noodle is a story that begins with sentient abandoned bots. It’s a story that explores rights, choices, and discrimination. I love how it balances a cozy story about robots who just want to cook, while also discussing their treatment and worried about their own future. This novella has plenty of robot snark and attention to food. I have been a fan of Newtiz in the past so I knew I’d enjoy this one, but I had no idea how much. There are plenty of tender little moments of finding memories of food or changing their appearance.

Automatic Noodle is about success and discrimination, but it’s about knowing that we should be able to show who we are. That the key to it might be to embrace what makes us different.
