Book Tour: Book Review: The Demon and the Light by Axie Oh

As a major Axie Oh fan, you know I had to finish this one! I have been following Oh for so long and was so excited for The Demon and the Light! It’s such a great sequel and the themes in this one! Keep reading this book review of The Demon and the Light for my full thoughts.

Summary

The battle is over, but the war is just beginning…

With the help of her friends and allies, Ren managed to topple the General’s insurrection, but the Floating World and its territories are still under threat of attack from the rival Volmaran Empire. And far worse, she was powerless to save Sunho from being overcome by the monstrous power in his blood. Now he’s gone, transformed into a feral, deadly creature that doesn’t even recognize her anymore, and her heart aches for the sweet boy she’s grown to love.

But the escalating war will not pause for her grief. Seen by some as a heavenly savior and others merely a figurehead to be manipulated, Ren must use all her courage and cunning to survive the royal court’s game long enough to find Sunho and bring him home before he loses himself to the Demon forever.

Review

(Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher. This has not impacted my review which is unbiased and honest.)

The Demon and the Light picks up where we left off. While there’s plenty of action to sink our teeth into, this sequel examines the cost of power and choice. It’s about being afraid of losing ourselves, what we hold dear, and what we would do to keep everything we love safe. This multiple POV book allows us to examine the power and the consequences. We are warned from falling into past mistakes, but also to realize when we can stop the cycle. This sequel is about love. We can think to protect someone means to retract, to try to stop our influence, but it’s really just not allowing them to choose.

In many ways, The Demon and the Light is a book which explores how we can keep ourselves from hurting the ones we love. We can often hurt the ones we love the most. But in this convoluted mess of power, responsibility, and protection how stay true to ourselves? If you like a sequel that continues the momentum, but also introduces depth this is for you!
