You’ve probably seen how much I loved Tarnished Are the Stars! Give me all the automaton books now, thank you. I am so excited to bring you this guest post from Rosiee.
Tarnished Are the Stars
A secret beats inside Anna Thatcher’s chest: an illegal clockwork heart. Anna works cog by cog — donning the moniker Technician — to supply black market medical technology to the sick and injured, against the Commissioner’s tyrannical laws.
Nathaniel Fremont, the Commissioner’s son, has never had to fear the law. Determined to earn his father’s respect, Nathaniel sets out to capture the Technician. But the more he learns about the outlaw, the more he questions whether his father’s elusive affection is worth chasing at all.
Their game of cat and mouse takes an abrupt turn when Eliza, a skilled assassin and spy, arrives. Her mission is to learn the Commissioner’s secrets at any cost — even if it means betraying her own heart.
When these uneasy allies discover the most dangerous secret of all, they must work together despite their differences and put an end to a deadly epidemic — before the Commissioner ends them first.

If we wanted to get to know your main characters(s) in TARNISHED, what music/film/tv/podcasts/fashion would we have to study to become their best friends?
I can’t, in good conscience, recommend befriending the Tarnished Are The Stars crew… Don’t get me wrong, I love those messy kids to the moon and back, but they are, well, messy, and they’re all still learning how to be good at friendship. Still, if you were determined to buddy up with them, here’s a foolproof to-do list:
The way to Anna’s heart (pun intended) is activism and hard work. Healthcare and minority rights are important to her, and she’s big into rising up against terrible odds and thriving even when society says you can’t. To study up for friendship with this rebellious redhead, here’s a media checklist to get you started:
-Watch Star Wars: Rogue One
-Watch Jessica Jones
-Watch Sense 8
-Read Sick Kids in Love by Hannah Moskowitz
-Read We Set the Dark on Fire by Tehlor Kay Mejia
-Listen to Hamilton and the Hamilton Mixtape
-Listen to the podcast The Strange Case of the Starship Iris
-Follow teen activists like Greta Thunberg, Little Miss Flint, and Emma Gonzalez on social media
Nathaniel’s more of an introvert, so going out–whether to fight injustice or party hard–isn’t really his style. He’s gone through a lot and is easily stressed out by the amount of power he has and the way his actions affect others, so he likes to keep it low key. If you want a buddy to hang out with under a blanket fort and watch feel good TV, get studying up on some of Nathaniel’s favorites:
-Watch Downton Abbey
-Watch Moana
-Watch Parks and Recreation
-Read Mooncakes by Suzanne Walker and Wendy Xu
-Read Technically You Started It
-Play Stardew Valley
-Listen to the Purrrcast podcast
-Bundle up in a comfy sweater and go outside to look at a tree for about 15 minutes
If you want a friend who takes charge and also occasionally takes lives, Eliza’s your gal! Stylish and stabby, she’s the friend who will tell you if your lipstick is smudged or the kind of enemy who will let you speak in front of a crowd with spinach in your teeth. She loves powerful women who have to fight for what they want, but she also has a soft spot for queer love and community. If you don’t mind always letting her be smarter, Eliza can be a great friend. She’ll either have your back… or stab you in it. For the fastrack to friendship, check out these favs:
-Watch Ocean’s 8
-Watch The Favorite
-Watch She Ra
-Read And I Darken by Kiersten White
-Read Of Fire and Stars by Audrey Coulthurst
-Read The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid
-Listen to Six: The Musical
-Listen to the podcast Secret Feminist Agenda
While the Tarnished kids have pretty varied tastes, there are two things they can wholeheartedly agree on: Queer Eye and The Great British Baking Show.
