I am a huge fan of Zea Kemp’s books since Somewhere Between Bitter and Sweet. And one thing I’ve always loved is how lyrical they are. But An Appetite for Miracles takes the cake with its verse structure! Keep reading this book review for my full thoughts.
Summary
Danna Mendoza Villarreal’s grandfather is slowly losing himself as his memories fade, and Danna’s not sure her plan to help him remember through the foods he once reviewed will be enough to bring him back. Especially when her own love of food makes her complicated relationship with her mother even more difficult.
Raúl Santos has been lost ever since his mother was wrongly incarcerated two years ago. Playing guitar for the elderly has been his only escape, to help them remember and him forget. But when his mom unexpectedly comes back into his life, what is he supposed to do when she isn’t the same person who left?
When Danna and Raúl meet, sparks fly immediately and they embark on a mission to heal her grandfather…and themselves. Because healing is something best done together—even if it doesn’t always look the way we want it to.
Review
(Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher. This has not impacted my review which is unbiased and honest.)
An Appetite for Miracles is tender, emotional, and introspective. It’s a story about the ones we love which drift away from us. We try to keep them close to us, but fate, circumstances, and time let them float away. The question is just how do we bridge that distance. How do we figure out how to reconcile, to come together, to have moments fo recognition. An Appetite for Miracles is a love letter to family and food. To all the every day miracles and the ones that move mountains, have rippling echoes.
It’s a story about the relationships we have with our parents – their scars, edges, and love. An Appetite for Miracles also examines the weight we have to carry. The gut wrenching feeling we can have when we aren’t seen for who we are. All the ways in which the world tries to make us – especially girls – uncomfortable in their own bodies. An Appetite for Miracles manages to balance these emotions with a story line about family.
