Review: Salvaged by Madeleine Roux

Salvaged is a science fiction thriller that gives off alien vibes. If you’ve been searching for a book that will deliver action and mystery, then check out Salvaged.

Summary

Rosalyn Devar is on the run from her famous family, the bioengineering job she’s come to hate, and her messed-up life. She’s run all the way to outer space, where she’s taken a position as a “space janitor,” cleaning up ill-fated research expeditions. But no matter how far she goes, Rosalyn can’t escape herself. After too many mistakes on the job, she’s given one last chance: take care of salvaging the Brigantine, a research vessel that has gone dark, with all crew aboard thought dead.

But the Brigantine’s crew are very much alive–if not entirely human. Now Rosalyn is trapped on board, alone with a crew infected by a mysterious parasitic alien. The captain, Edison Aries, seems to still maintain some control over himself and the crew, but he won’t be able to keep fighting much longer. Rosalyn and Edison must find a way to stop the parasite’s onslaught…or it may take over the entire human race.

Review

(Disclaimer: I received this book from Netgalley. This has not impacted my review which is unbiased and honest.)

TW: alcohol addiction, physical abuse

Salvaged stars Rosalyn a recovering alcohol addict who finds herself in the middle of an alien infection and a conspiracy. Salvaged is a thriller that delivers mystery, conspiracy, and sacrifice. It’s entertaining and a fast read. What surprised me was that we get a few chapters of perspective from some of the alien parasite victims which was a refreshing twist on a story that feels vaguely familiar to me.

Because of that, I found Salvaged to be an interesting take on the idea of agency and infection. What remains within us when we’ve been infected? These chapters stood out to me the most because of their unique nature and the role they play in the larger mystery story. When memories are used as weapons of control. You’re never really sure what is happening in Salvaged.

Whether that’s Rosalyn’s past, the motivations of the alien parasite, or the past of our side characters, Salvaged is an entertaining science fiction thriller. Find Salvaged on Goodreads, Amazon, Indiebound & The Book Depository.
