Review: Shatter the Sky by Rebecca Kim Wells

Shatter the Sky is one of those books that will wring your heart. It’s about the choices we have to make for the ones we love. It’s a tender book about making mistakes, being blinded by love, and dragons.

Summary

Raised among the ruins of a conquered mountain nation, Maren dreams only of sharing a quiet life with her girlfriend Kaia—until the day Kaia is abducted by the Aurati, prophetic agents of the emperor, and forced to join their ranks. Desperate to save her, Maren hatches a plan to steal one of the emperor’s coveted dragons and storm the Aurati stronghold.

If Maren is to have any hope of succeeding, she must become an apprentice to the Aromatory—the emperor’s mysterious dragon trainer. But Maren is unprepared for the dangerous secrets she uncovers: rumors of a lost prince, a brewing rebellion, and a prophecy that threatens to shatter the empire itself. Not to mention the strange dreams she’s been having about a beast deep underground…

With time running out, can Maren survive long enough to rescue Kaia from impending death? Or could it be that Maren is destined for something greater than she could have ever imagined?

Review

(Disclaimer: I received this book from Netgalley. This has not impacted my review which is unbiased and honest.)

You had me at sapphic adventurers and dragons. But Shatter the Sky is even more than that. Not only is it a series opener (and you will immediately scream for book two), but it is a story about confronting hardship and change. We’ve seen so many adventurers who have braved dangerous odds for the ones we love and seeing it fueled by f/f love is even more fulfilling.

Shatter the Sky is a book about a moment in time – a bubble about ready to burst – as the world is going to change for them – ripped apart by prophecy and uncertainty. It’s a book that is very aware of what it’s like to live in a home that isn’t technically ours anymore, a history that has been stolen from us, and how Maren has to steal a dragon to rescue her girlfriend.

Maren & Main Characters

Maren is one of those main characters that are utterly relatable. She’s the girl who never felt like she had to leave, who ends up having to leave everything she ever knew to find her love. When the girl who always wanted to leave was taken, so that Maren have to leave to reclaim her heart. She faces high stakes, but she is so determined and passionate – that you can’t help but love her.

Overall,

Maren faces high stakes. Secrets and other characters pasts come to play, will she make it in time to save the girl she loves? As the story develops, you will find your heart quickening. The world of dragons, holes in the governments, and politics will captivate you. Shatter the Sky takes place in a time of war, running out of supplies, people out for vengeance, and an out of touch ruler. We are rooting for her even if we don’t know how she will get there. Shatter the Sky asks us what will we lose, sacrifice, in order to save the ones we love, and how do we become more? More powerful, a better ruler? In a world where we just want to live freely, with ourselves and not at the whims of others.
