Review: Lights Out by Navessa Allen

Calling all fans of Butcher and Blackbird we’ve got your next dark romance pick! This one has a similar swoony romance, masked men, and power games. And I couldn’t stop reading! Keep reading this book review of Lights Out for my full thoughts.

Summary

That thought pops into my head whenever I pull up my favorite social media app, but alas, every time I scroll, I learn something new about myself, and another one is born. And yes, I know I’m responsible for what the algorithm shows me, but I’m trying to ignore that fact.

Lately, my feed has been dominated by masked men. I’ve favorited videos with them dressed in full cosplay, decked out in futuristic military apparel, and wrapped up like ghouls.

But more than anything else, my FYP is filled with shirtless men wearing ghost masks. Bonus points if they’re heavily tattooed, wielding a knife, or covered in fake blood. At night, I dream about being chased by them, of them catching me and doing deliciously dark things to my more than willing body.

I never could have guessed that by sending one drunken text, those dreams would become my new reality.

Review

(Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher. This has not impacted my review which is unbiased and honest.)

Lights Out was entertaining and a whole basket of fun. For dark romance fans and Butcher and Blackbird fans – like me – Lights Out was right up my alley. Because while, at the end of the day, there’s spice and elements of kinky spice, it’s about finding someone who sees to the essence of someone. Someone we can be ourselves with despite the darkness we see in ourselves, our past, our jobs, and our baggage. A person who sees it all, embraces it, and loves us for it.

The dual POV is absolutely necessary – especially at the beginning – and I loved their banter, chemistry, and power plays. Lights Out is about love, obsession, and teamwork. We can see the care, gentleness, and loyalty of Josh. And similarly we can see Aly’s playfulness, her cleverness, and her bravery. Lights Out delivers action, swoon, and spice all at once. I would gladly read more in this universe just to see these characters more. We love to see their genuine care for each other.
