Review: All This & More by Peng Shepherd

As someone who adored Choose Your Own Adventure books as a child, this was a nostalgic thrilling ride. All This & More is a book about what we would do for the ‘perfect’ life. It manages to balance action and introspection at once. Keep reading this book review of All This & More for my full thoughts.

Summary

One woman. Endless options. Every choice has consequences.

Meek, play-it-safe Marsh has just turned forty-five, and her life is in shambles. Her career is stagnant, her marriage has imploded, and her teenage daughter grows more distant by the day. Marsh is convinced she’s missed her chance at everything—romance, professional fulfillment, and adventure—and is desperate for a do-over.

She can’t believe her luck when she’s selected to be the star of the global sensation All This and More, a show that uses quantum technology to allow contestants the chance to revise their pasts and change their present lives. It’s Marsh’s only shot to seize her dreams, and she’s determined to get it right this time.

But even as she rises to become a famous lawyer, gets back together with her high school sweetheart, and travels the world, she begins to worry that All This and More’s promises might be too good to be true. Because while the technology is amazing, something seems a bit off.…

Can Marsh really make her life everything she wants it to be? And is it worth it?

Review

(Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher. This has not impacted my review which is unbiased and honest.)

I loved the idea of multiple timelines, infinite choices, and possibility at our fingertips. All This & More appeals to this universal pull of FOMO. Of knowing that hindsight is 20/20. It’s for everyone who has been kept awake at night thinking of everything that could have been. That wishes on shooting stars to go back in time and pick different choices. The daydreams on our commute of what it might be like if we had taken the other path. There’s a dreamlike quality, a thrilling possibility, to the beginning of All This & More which is only the beginning.

What starts as a dream, turns into the whispers of a nightmare. Because what comes on the other side of choice? The knowledge that we can never have it all. That the chasing of perfection is a never ending quest. All This & More balances this human ambition to search for perfection with the question of if we can ever achieve it and especially with this technology. It feels Black Mirror-esque in all the best ways. While All This & More explores these introspective big picture themes, it also delivers action and thrills – all in a CYOA package.

It’s become my latest obsession and I’m already waiting to read it all over again. Find All This & More on Goodreads, Storygraph, Amazon, Bookshop.org, Blackwells, & Libro. fm.
