Review: Talking As Fast As I Can by Lauren Graham

This memoir from Lauren Graham is funny, wise, and a wonderful look at her life. It is straight Lorelai Gilmore and if you are a fan, this is something you must check out. Looking at her path to Gilmore Girls, why she shouldn’t be a judge on television, and her love of Gilmore Girls, Lauren brings a humorous voice to it all.

Summary

There are some serious matter deviations, on aging and looks in Hollywood, for example. But these are dealt with humor and a general “You do you” attitude. There are no in depth discussions, just want to throw that out there. This is more of a general survey and the bulk of the promise is the Gilmore Girls sections. Lauren goes through and re-watches the old episodes giving us behind the scenes memories and her own funny commentary. The diary entries while filming the revival is similarly funny, but even more touching (I teared up a few times).

Review

Overall this is down to earth humor with a side dish of wisdom thrown in. Some of my favorite chapters are the REI chapter and the Project Runway one. These are funny, a tad vulnerable, but also expose a side of her I never saw before. (Also Old Lady Jackson is my spirit character). The Kitchen Timer technique is something I know I will be using a lot more now. These dabs of wisdom and good advice are all narrated with humor.

We are able to skim the surface of how she got to Gilmore Girls, the revival and everything in between. My only true complaint is the lack of depth, but I am okay with it. Can you tell how funny I thought this was? This isn’t meant to be a treatise. It is entertaining and gives you a behind the scenes glimpse of her life. The ending is beautiful and has a surprising amount of depth. I really enjoyed this memoir, but I am definitely biased by how important Gilmore Girls is to me.

You can pick this up on Amazon and add it to Goodreads.

  1. I am reading this one this week too. I’ve had it from the library for a while and just haven’t gotten around to it. I love Lauren Graham’s character in Gilmore Girls and Parenthood and I often think that she IS those characters. Some of my hesitation to read her memoir might be from fear that she will tell me she really isn’t 🙁
