I went into this book expecting something like Outlander, but what I got was something even more surprising. Bury the Living is a rich tale that has elements of gods and saints, war and suffering, and love and friendships. Nora’s time travel has a purpose and a complex and violent history. Her story is full of surprises, twists, and the power of courage.
Nora immerses herself in aid work as a form of penance when she is sent back time to try to change the course of history. Nora has a detailed history full of betrayal and suffering, and her mission brings her into contact with many passionate fearless women. One cannot help but empathize with her, the confusion and the sense of loss she feels. It is a testament to the mistakes we make and the knowledge that we are the hardest to forgive. In spite of it all, Nora is determined not to fail and her courage matches the desperation of the times.
While I was expecting something familiar, the plot combines elements in unique and creative ways. Nora’s mission, Thomas’ identity, and the cast of unique characters make the story a captivating read. It is hard not to get lost in the pursuit, caught up in the action, and holding your breath for the next action. The nature of the dangerous times (and my lack of knowledge) only makes it more gripping and obsessive.
I was obsessed and finished the book in two days only to find out that this is a series! This both made me so happy and yet so frustrated (the countdown to the next book begins). I cannot wait to find out what happens in the next novel. The book is released on September 6th and I would recommend the book if you enjoyed Outlander! Here is a link to purchase it yourself!
